The Redbones and Melungeons are hidden minorities
whose ancestry is clouded in a history of prejudice, ignorance and
abuse. They likely came to the Southeastern United States before the
English settled Jamestown. The early progenitors were people of
Mediterranean/Turkish/Portuguese/Spanish extraction who married
Indians and later Africans and Northern Europeans. They are now
coming out of the closet.
