Jean Laffite (Lafitte)
Privateers of the Gulf - 1803-1820
By: Stanley Faye
Soft cover, 8" X 10", bibliography, index.
This is a long neglected account of Jean and Pierre Laffite, Gulf Coast privateers, and their relations with the new government of Louisiana, the Spanish who still dominated the area outside the U.S., the Mexican Revolution and the government in Washington.
After many years of research Faye wrote the manuscript in 1928 and failing to get it published tried to get his friend J. Frank Dobie, to assist in getting it accepted. It was never published and the Dobie trust gave the manuscript to the University of Texas where it has remained.
All who are interested in this period will want this book.

The Journal Of Jean Lafitte
By: Jean Lafitte
153 pages, soft cover, photos.
In the nineteenth century it was popular practice for notorious figures to fake their death, change identity and location and then live a relatively normal life.
So it was with the Privateer Jean Lafitte. After his announced death in the 1820's he lived in several states in the U.S., raised a family and wrote his journal.
At his request the publication of the journal was delayed for 100 years. In the 1950's the journal was translated from French to English and published.
The original manuscript was purchased by Texas' Governor Price Daniel and is on display at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Archives located in Liberty, Texas. Even with Lafitte's interest in presenting his story to his advantage it is a fascinating account and it is his personal account. It is a counter to the many fictional accounts created by fiction writers and the movie industry. The authenticity of the Journal is the subject of controversy among Lafitte fans.
